Riot for Romance recently released their take on Radiohead’s classic single, “Karma Police,” from the English rock band’s OK Computer album. Inspired by a wide range of artists, including Swervedriver, Tears For Fears, Quicksand, Echo & The Bunnymen, U2, Jawbox, The Cure, and Slowdive, Hansen, Miotti, and Nunn believe that by covering a song, they can honor the original artist while also adding their own twist to it.
For Riot for Romance, covering a classic song is not just about playing it exactly as it was first released. Instead, it’s about interpreting it in their own ethos while still paying homage to the original. Vocalist, guitarist, and keys player Jason Hansen explained that there’s something satisfying about putting your own spin on a classic song you love, and that it’s an art form in itself.
The band members actually came together when they decided to do a rendition of “The Dungeon,” a deep cut from Starflyer 59’s Shoegaze album, Silver. They enjoyed interpreting it in their own way so much that they decided to write an EP. Now, years later, history repeats itself as Riot for Romance releases another cover song.
Radiohead has always been an influence on Riot for Romance. Their creativity has continuously challenged the status quo of pop music. “Karma Police” was the perfect song for them to approach. They plan on including the track in their upcoming LP, which they are currently writing and producing.
