Disney+ is reimagining the nostalgic film, Holes, for a new generation. The platform has officially ordered a pilot for a television adaptation of Louis Sachar’s beloved 1998 novel. Read more about what we know so far inside.

Following the success of the 2003 movie starring Shia LaBeouf and Khleo Thomas, Disney+ is welcoming the next generation into the world of Holes. This reboot will be slightly different as it plans to introduce a significant twist: the lead character will now be a young teenage girl.

According to Variety, the new series will retain its core elements of the original story but with a fresh perspective. The official logline reveals: “In this reimagining of the beloved 1998 book from Louis Sachar, a teenage girl is sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden forces the campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose.”

The creative team behind the project includes writer and executive producer Alina Mankin, with Liz Phang serving as showrunner and executive producer. Drew Goddard, known for his work on The Martian and Daredevil, will executively produce through his Goddard Textiles banner alongside Sarah Esberg. Additional executive producers include Mike Medavoy and Shamrock, the rights holder. Andrea Massaro will act as co-executive producer, and Walden Media, which produced the original film, is also on board.

Disney’s 20th Television, where Goddard has an overall deal, will handle production. Reports indicate that Walden Media has long been interested in developing a series adaptation, making this pilot order a long-awaited milestone.

The original Holes followed Stanley Yelnats, a teen wrongfully sent to a detention camp, Camp Green Lake, where he and fellow campers were forced to dig holes as punishment. As Stanley uncovers secrets about the camp’s true purpose, he discovers its connection to his family’s history. The movie starred an ensemble cast, including Sigourney Weaver, Jon Voight, Patricia Arquette, Dulé Hill, and the late, Eartha Kitt.

This modern twist with a gender-swapped lead could introduce Holes to a new audience while honoring its timeless themes of resilience and redemption. No news about casting and production have been announced.
