Magic City Mafia uses power of music for sharing personal experiences. MCM Malice, born and raised on the south side of Billings, grew up in gang activity and systemic struggles. For him, music became a lifeline, inspired by legends like 2Pac and N.W.A. His partner, Takoda Guzman, brings a different perspective, having been adopted into a family where he struggled to find his place. Guzman began freestyling at just 11 years old, honing his skills in parking lots and classrooms, laying the groundwork for his rap career.
Their latest release, My Bittersweet Gospel, marks a significant shift in their musical journey. This EP features three tracks that show a more vulnerable side of the duo. The opening song, “Ru still here?!“, sets the tone with soulful melodies and lyrics reflecting on personal struggles. It invites listeners to reflect on their own experiences of faith and resilience.
The second track, “Searching for your eyes,” shifts to a more uplifting vibe, incorporating rhythmic elements that encourage hope and perseverance. Its catchy chorus resonates with themes of overcoming adversity, offering a message of resilience and determination. The final song, “Magic City,” concludes the EP on a reflective note, combining heartfelt vocals with a powerful message about love and connection. It serves as a reminder of the importance of community and support in one’s spiritual journey.
My Bittersweet Gospel offers a striking emotional shift from Magic City Mafia’s earlier work, which often focused on gritty depictions of gang life and struggle. This EP expands their range, proving that they are more than just a product of their environment. They are artists unafraid to explore the full spectrum of human experience—the highs and lows, the pain and the hope.
