CBS has officially pulled the plug on Poppa’s House after just one season. Let’s reminisce on the wonderful moments from the father-son sitcom starring Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr. inside.
The news comes as a disappointment to fans who were excited to see the duo team up on screen in a project that celebrated family, generational divides, and comedic timing only the Wayans could deliver.
Initially ordered to series in 2023, Poppa’s House followed Wayans Sr. as a radio host navigating life’s later chapters while adjusting to his adult son (played by Wayans Jr.), a therapist who moves back in with him. The show offered a comedic exploration of father-son dynamics, filtered through sharp writing and multi-camera laughs.
Although the series had a short run, it made a strong impression thanks to its talented cast and crew. The show was directed in part by the legendary Robert Townsend — known for The Five Heartbeats and Hollywood Shuffle — who brought his signature blend of warmth, humor, and Black family storytelling to several episodes.
Townsend shared behind-the-scenes moments on Instagram, calling the project “a beautiful, Black sitcom moment” and praising the experience as “magic in the making.”
In the heartfelt post, Townsend wrote: “Working with Damon and Damon Jr. was an honor. The laughs were real, the love was real. We made something special.”
Fans and cast members also took to social media to reflect on the show’s cancellation and the impact it had. Despite the cancellation, Poppa’s House served as a rare opportunity to see two generations of Wayans men working together on a project that felt authentic to their comedic legacy. Their chemistry on screen is built from real-life familiarity and added a heartfelt touch to the show’s situational gags and family lessons.
The end of Poppa’s House might close one chapter, but surely it won’t be the last time we see the Wayans family on screen. If anything, the brief series reminded fans of the magic that happens when Black comedic legends tell stories rooted in love, family, and funny-as-hell life lessons.
As Townsend put it, “This was just the beginning.”
