As a bisexual male myself I remember hearing Mad Tsai’s acoustic rendition of Boy Bi months back and found myself relating instantly to the lyrics. The way he sings effortlessly about how complicated discovering your sexuality can be before ultimately coming to terms and realising it’s who you are was something I instantly connected with and, judging by the way the song blew up on social media, many other people felt the same way. It’s become a modern day Bisexual anthem that reflects on what so many in the LGBTQ+ community go through and I loved every single moment of it.
The tongue in cheek lyrics are a personal highlight with their being multiple witty moments that got a good chuckle out of me as well as the insatiable hooks that I find myself singing under my breath consistently, surprised no one around me has started singing it yet too. It’s got a similar vibe to mxmtoon’s track Prom Dress where the buoyant melodies and carefree style begin to take over you until you find yourself gently swaying from side to side without a care in the world. It’s an utterly wonderful affair that captures everything that runs through the head of a young bisexual male and will be a mainstay and many Pride parades for years to come.
You’ve even got a wonderfully cinematic music video that feels like something straight out of a John Hughes movie, which makes sense considering that’s where the inspiration for the video came from as Tsai explains, “I grew up watching these John Hughes coming-of-age films without ever seeing somebody that accurately represented my coming-of-age story—someone who is LGBTQ+ and Asian-American—so I wanted to create my own narrative that talked about these issues through the lens of a cheesy teen film, which I took inspiration from movies like ‘Mean Girls’ and ‘The Breakfast Club.’” He’s living his best High School Musical The Musical The Series life in this video and we’re here for it!
