As back-to-school season kicks off, The Vita Coco Company, Inc. has partnered with international recording artist and activist Becky G to create a new greenspace at her elementary school. Read more about this impactful project inside.

Becky G is a proud advocate for her hometown, honoring her childhood school, Oak Street Elementary School in a special way. This project is part of Vita Coco’s social impact initiative, the Vita Coco Project® (VCP), which focuses on empowering communities through sustainable efforts.

Becky G joined the celebration with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The greenspace, designed in collaboration with the school’s PTA and local leaders, will be named by the Oak Street school community. The 2,100-square-foot area features garden plots, compost bins, a farm stand, fruit trees, and reading nooks, along with a versatile outdoor classroom and play area.

The singer emphasized the importance of the space, saying, “Growing up, my Inglewood community shaped who I am today. Partnering with Vita Coco to reimagine a space where students can learn and play means everything to me.”

Becky G highlighted how each feature of the greenspace reflects the needs and dreams of the local community, with a focus on promoting food education, healthy eating, and active lifestyles.

The lack of accessible greenspaces is a growing concern across the U.S., where 100 million Americans, including 28 million children, lack nearby parks or outdoor areas. Only one in three people in Latin communities live within a mile of a park. Vita Coco’s Growing Roots Grant program, in collaboration with the Arbor Day Foundation, aims to address these disparities by funding innovative projects like this one in under-resourced schools and communities.

The project comes just in time for National Hispanic Heritage Month. Becky G is a proud Mexican American, who is giving back to her community in a major way. The initiative underscores Vita Coco’s commitment to creating safe and enriching environments for children, ensuring that they have access to outdoor spaces that nurture their curiosity and connection to the natural world.

Shout out Becky G and Vita Coco for making the world a better place. Find more information about the project here.
