Rising singer/songwriter Chocc, also known as Cori Broadus, unveils the official music video for her heartbreak pop anthem, “Johnny Don’t Break My Heart,” from her recently released EP, Journals to Johnny. Directed by her father, Snoop Dogg, alongside Guapcityproductions, the visual highlights the raw and relatable emotional rollercoaster of love and heartbreak.

The cinematic piece evokes an almost nostalgic feel of the 90s era, capturing a heartbroken Chocc waking in the middle of the night to find that Johnny—a universal figure she describes as a “John Doe”—still hasn’t come home. Overcome with anguish, she lashes out, damaging their shared home in an emotional outburst. Yet, amidst the chaos, she is grounded by tender memories of their love, brought to life as she gazes at photos from their happier times.

3. ROZET – Shadow Wurk

Source:ROZET

Miami-born audio-visual artist, singer, and rapper ROZET has released their new single ‘Shadow Wurk’ out now via Young Art Records. ‘Shadow Wurk’ serves as the fourth and final single off their upcoming HEAD EP following ‘Eat’, ‘Thinking A Lot’, and ‘Feelings Aren’t Facts’.

‘Shadow Wurk’ is a tantalizing addition to HEAD that continues to draw on ROZET’s experiences as a ballroom enthusiast and LGBTQ community member. Empowering from start to finish, ROZET gives a sassy and assertive vocal performance, sparking rhythmic flows over glamorous synths and light house percussion. The track embraces ROZET’s therapeutic approach to processing emotions while honing a sense of self-confidence and defiance against conformity both sonically and lyrically.

“I wrote this song to activate this unapologetic phase of facing my subconscious, the suppressed aspects of myself head on, and being proud of it while exposing it. The prefrontal cortex helps with self reflection while the amygdala is accessing difficult emotions like fear and anxiety. They are all having a whole ballroom dance battle against each other but all a part of the same space, community, and brain. By integrating these aspects it creates this  greater sense of mission and self worth in society. Using the shadow as less of something to fear but to dance with.”  – ROZET

‘Shadow Wurk’ arrives with a visualizer directed and choreographed by ROZET. On the visualizer, ROZET says, “The visualizer is an abstract depiction of being overwhelmed by the process of shadow work. I decided to incorporate a giant head to convey that message. In the scenes you’ll notice this relationship between older self and inner child – like a baby being reborn again – reparenting myself has felt like the worst pain yet the greatest reward. I give myself tens across the board honey! I hope it gives reassurance that people may need post-trauma recovery!”

Emerging after years in stealth mode, Miami-born multidisciplinary artist ROZET is poised to be one of the year’s favorite new acts. Following a feature on Machinedrum’s ‘RISE’ via Ninja Tune, ROZET released the first three singles, ‘Eat’, ‘Thinking A Lot’, and ‘Feelings Aren’t Facts’, off their upcoming HEAD EP. Set to arrive on February 14, HEAD feeds on ROZET’s studies in Psychology, Buddhism and mental health treatment and combines it with their training as a dancer and musician, finding the space where sound, mind, and body converge.

4. Josh Gilligan – Ceiling

Source:Josh Gilligan – Topic

Today, Nashville-based singer-songwriter and filmmaker Josh Gilligan releases the warm and affecting single “Ceiling,” from his forthcoming debut album Party of One, set for release January 24th, 2025 via Chicago and Nashville-based indie label Easy Does It Records.

With ethereal, soft rock chords and disarming lyrics, “Ceiling” perfectly embodies the buoyant spirit of Party of One, a somber, yet hopeful collection of songs. Of the track, Gilligan says, “‘Ceiling’ is about feeling the pull out of a phase of life and moving into a new one. No hard feelings, it’s just about taking the next step away from something when you no longer need it and it doesn’t need you.”

“Ceiling” follows a streak of single releases including last month’s introspective tune “500 Questions” and the delicate, hopeful song “Anything;” emphasizing the artist’s vocal delivery as “feather-light, resting easily atop a bed of warm guitars and effortless grooves” (Under The Radar).

Those who might not be familiar with his sound or presence in the Nashville indie scene, Gilligan has worked in various capacities with artists like Halfnoise,  Madi Diaz, Elke, and Medium Build, whom he recently opened for on tour last fall. His diverse experiences on stage have infused his music with a rich blend of influences, setting the stage for his most personal project to date.

His debut album Party of One, due this month, marks a new step in his musical journey, following the success of his 2021 EP, Go Around

Party of One collects the wisdom Gilligan gleaned from a long period of deep sadness, self-doubt, and confusion. There are songs about separation, internal conflicts, creative disappointments, all of which added up to a pervasive melancholy in his late 20s and early 30s. He’d spent nearly a decade gigging around Nashville, balancing other jobs adjacent to the music industry with his own musical pursuits.

I wasn’t expecting to feel so hollowed out after my twenties,” says Gilligan, “and I was wondering if I still wanted to make music. But I felt like I owed it to myself to give it another try, even though in the back of my mind I’m thinking, What can I add to the conversation? Why would anyone want to listen to what I have to say? ‘Anything’ came out of that, and it’s been a good message to live with. A lot of people think that if they’re not doing something super ambitious and highly visible, that means they’re doing something wrong or they’re not being brave enough. But it takes so much bravery to do anything at all.”

Gilligan drew from the ‘70s pop and soft rock of his childhood, creating a sound that resonates with personal references: the graceful melodicism of Paul Simon, the restless experimentation of Todd Rundgren, the emotional directness of James Taylor. “My mom was raising five kids—I was the middle child—and she would take us on long drives to make us sleepy. And she would play Wings, America, Christopher Cross. Instead of rejecting her music, I embraced all of it. That’s the stuff I’m thinking about when I make music. It completely formed my sensibilities. My mom inadvertently crafted the palette of Party of One.”

Gilligan spent years recording, mixing, and even sequencing another record, but something didn’t sit right. It took bravery to set it aside and start again from scratch. In 2022 he spent a month in California, savoring the change of scenery and working with a different set of musicians. In one memorable afternoon he and Jacob Jeffries (who plays keyboards for Vulfpeck) wrote a song called “Tight Rope,” out now. It’s a gentle ballad with chiming guitars, shimmering keyboards, and lyrics about how falling off the tight rope gets you back down to earth. It was a breakthrough. “Honestly it felt less like doing a co-write and more like finding a long-lost member of my musical family. I remember thinking, This is how I want the album to sound. I built everything else around that song. It came out like a sneeze, but the others came together with more time and care.”

When he’s not making music, Gilligan enjoys spending his time outdoors, fishing or working on vintage music equipment. His passion for music and creativity is matched by his appreciation for the simple pleasures in life, and he strives to create songs that resonate on a genuine level with his audience.

9. Chatham Rabbits – Gas Money

Source:Chatham Rabbits

For North Carolinian Americana-folk duo Chatham Rabbits, their fanbase means so much more than folks purchasing concert tickets or streaming albums. Since the inception of their ever-evolving music career, Chatham Rabbits’ Sarah and Austin McCombie have kept personal relationships with those who believe in them, wishing fans happy birthdays and hosting events at their farm for their most loyal supporters. For their latest single, “Gas Money,” Sarah started writing the song with one particular fan in mind; an 86-year-old woman from Virginia named Eve.

“Eve and I have been pen pals for six years, ever since she started coming to our very tiny coffee shop shows way back in 2018,” says McCombie. “We send each other snail mail and sometimes she’ll tuck in a $20 bill for me to ‘treat myself.’ Most recently, she wrote to me and included a crisp bill with a sticky note reading ‘gas money for the long road home.’” Sarah immediately knew the poetic line was meant to be in a song and got to writing. “It all came together when I was lamenting on the particular heartbreak I was feeling when I realized I had little to give someone except wishing them well and a little gas money to get them home,” she says.

“This song also encompasses the recklessness of youth that I thought I lost, but found again in my early thirties,” McCombie adds. “Let’s forget what happened, not the way we felt / You remind me honey, I’m a deep, deep well / I got things nobody knows about me,” she sings over a chugging guitar in the song’s first chorus. “Whatever it was, it woke me up / Pulled me out of the same old rut / I haven’t felt so good and bad in years / But all that I can give you is gas money for the long road home.” “It’s freeing and terrifying, and I’m ultimately a better person for having lived it.”

“Gas Money” is the latest single from Chatham Rabbits’ upcoming album, Be Real With Me, a coming-of-age collection for the band and the fans who’ve grown alongside them—out February 14th. Source:Charlie Bereal

GRAMMY-nominated multi-instrumentalist Charlie Bereal returns with his latest single, “Hope,” now available via Death Row Records/gamma.. The self-produced track, co-produced by Josef Liemberg, is an uplifting and soulful anthem of faith, resilience, and devotion, deeply rooted in perseverance through life’s challenges.

With heartfelt lyrics and a powerful melody, “Hope” reflects the journey of staying steadfast in one’s purpose and spiritual commitment. The chorus echoes a determination to rise above adversity, while the verses highlight the strength found in grace and the will to keep moving forward. The track serves as a testament to hope and faith, inspiring listeners to hold onto their beliefs and stay strong in the face of uncertainty.

Originally intended as a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on his birthday, “Hope” has taken on a more personal meaning for Bereal in the wake of the recent California wildfires. His hometowns of Pasadena and Altadena were severely impacted, with Charlie losing his uncle’s church and several homes and businesses belonging to family and friends. The song now carries a deeply personal message of strength and unity, resonating with those affected by the fires and inspiring hope for the community to come together and rebuild.

As Charlie reflects on the devastation, he shares: “Being a Pasadena/Altadena Native and watching my family church’s, homes, and businesses burn has been completely devastating for me and our community. But one thing I know is that my city is strong, and we’re finding hope.”

“Hope” is Charlie Bereal’s third release with the iconic West Coast label Death Row Records and serves as the final preview before his highly anticipated solo debut album Walk With The Father. It follows his debut singles, “Walk With The Father” and “Never Gonna Take Away My Love. ” The latter officially announced the exciting new chapter in his career with a collaborative Instagram post featuring Snoop Dogg and Death Row Records.

Born into a musical family in California, Charlie Bereal’s journey began in the church, where he first picked up the guitar at a young age. By high school, he was already touring with Grammy-winning Gospel singer Donnie McClurkin, and by 18, he had built a successful career as a producer and touring guitarist. Known for his behind-the-scenes work, Bereal has contributed guitar melodies to iconic tracks like Aaliyah’s “More Than a Woman,” Missy Elliott’s “One Minute Man,” Mýa’s “Love Is Like Whoa,” and Jamie Foxx’s “Do What It Do.” His collaborations span across industry giants such as Jay-Z, Ja Rule, P Diddy, Nelly, Busta Rhymes, Kanye West, Ashanti, Brandy, Mario, Tweet, and Toni Braxton, earning him numerous GRAMMY nominations, and a Fender guitar partnership. However, despite his success, Bereal felt a calling to pursue his own music, leading him to transition into a solo artist, blending classic soul and gospel with a modern twist. With some already impressive streaming numbers and support, there’s much to be excited about when it comes to this multi-talented artist.

12. Jeshi – Scumbag

Source:Jeshi

London’s concept album King, Jeshi has dropped his new single “SCUMBAG”. A truly hypnotic creation, the driving pace manifests the city Jeshi speaks of directly into the track. This frenetic single, produced by JD. REID (Kelela, Sudan Archives), features a subtle sample of Dizzee Rascal’s “Stand Up Tall” amid lyrics about righting wrongs (or not!) and adolescent apathy. This offering is one of the final puzzle pieces before his full album AIRBAG WOKE ME UP (out Jan 24th) is shared with the world.

Jeshi elaborates on the freneticism of “SCUMBAG”: “Scumbag is a song about nostalgia looking back at the madness of being young running round getting up to no good. It’s something I miss a lot, things being simpler and not having to care about everything as much.”

“SCUMBAG” releases alongside an official music video directed by Will Dohrn and follows on from
“SAINT OR SINNER” featuring British rapper Sainté

At the core of Jeshi’s sophomore effort is dynamism; the harnessing of movement and his quest to feel alive in every sense of the word. This sentiment has always felt core to Jeshi’s artistic mission. This has never been as palpable as on Jeshi’s electrifying second album AIRBAG WOKE ME UP. It’s a collection of moment-capturing songs built to ignite reactions and start conversations. His scene-stealing jaunts to stages worldwide clearly influence his live-wire sound. Jeshi and his cohort smash through moods and tempos like kids let loose on dodgem cars. “I want to make things that have intent and feel like statements,” Jeshi declares. His versatile voice is the conductive thread that pulls everything together. “On Universal Credit, my voice was used in one way, whereas on this it’s used in ten ways,” he explains.

Jeshi jumped straight into releasing again after his 5 city and 7 date Australia & New Zealand tour and a packed London Fashion Week which included attending front row at shows by Ahluwalia, Fashion East, Labrum, Natasha Zinko as well as events with The Face, Slawn X Saatchi, Knwls, Jordan Luca & Wonderland. In February & March, Jeshi is embarking on his biggest tour yet, visiting Oslo, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Berlin, Glasgow, Brussels, Paris, Amsterdam, Bristol, Manchester, Glasgow, Leeds, Dublin & culminating in a hometurf show at Village Underground in London. Tickets available here

Jeshi’s authentic realism and self-understanding has made him beloved with fans and critics alike. Introspective without dwelling and honest without being glum, Jeshi finds a unique balance to reflect his perspective.

13. John Splithoff – Tangled/Magenta

Source:John Splithoff

Today, John Splithoff, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and enigmatic musical collaborator announced he will release his much-anticipated sophomore album, Far From Here on March 21 via Virgin. Pre-save and order HERE. John will be donating 100% of the proceeds from any music purchased on Bandcamp page (including ‘Tangled’ & ‘Magenta’) to Musicares for the next month, to assist artists and musicians affected by the Los Angeles fires.

John also announced he will tour the US, with dates including New York’s Racket, Los Angeles’s Troubadour, Nashville’s Exit/In, Washington D.C’s Union Stage, Chicago’s Outset, and more! Tickets on sale now, for more info visit: https://www.johnsplithoff.com/tour.

Far From Here draws on classic soul, pop, jazz, roots and R&B, showcasing one of the most soothing and soulful voices of his generation, with arrangements often focused on his voice and just piano/guitar, a sound he wanted to recreate after performing the tracks solo on tour. Mostly self produced by John, his voice and musical approach recalls the icons of music from Michael McDonald to Sade, as well as its more celebrated innovators like Benny Sings and Mk.Gee.

John today released two singles, on “Tangled,” which was the first song he wrote for the album, in which he blends classic pop with soulful R&B and shares stories of the joys of romantic entanglement. The song is paired with soulful slow burner “Magenta (Days Go By)”, which showcases his atmospheric funk pop, and the perfect intro to his bold new sound, which is cohesive and eclectic. Schooled in timeless songwriter classicism his music often draws on similar values of musicality and song structure, with strong melodic hooks and extended bridges, that have been overshadowed for shorter stream and radio ready singles in modern music.

Discussing the track with Relix Magazine, who exclusively premiered “Magenta (Days Go By)”, John stated, “At the heart of it, these two songs depict different aspects of love and relationships. “Tangled” simply deals with the euphoria of infatuation and getting lost in the potential mess of it all. While “Magenta,” in a more complex manner, takes memories and the passage of time within a relationship and associates them with different colors, something akin to synesthesia. Some memories are red and full of life, some memories are a melancholic blue. Mix red and blue together and you get….”

John was raised in a music-filled home in the suburbs of Chicago and developed a deep appreciation at an early age for the timeless sounds of Stevie Wonder, Pink Floyd, Earth, Wind & Fire, Fleetwood Mac, these cornerstone influences shaping his unique musical identity. He had piano lessons and received his first guitar at 13, teaching himself to play through obsessively exploring the music of the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s. The catalyst of his music career began in high school when he was passed over for a spot on the baseball team, and auditioned for a vocal group on a whim.

From there he started writing songs, performing in bands, leading eventually to a degree in Jazz Performance from the renowned Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. He moved to New York City after crafting a 5 track EP in Chicago, not so subtly entitled The Move. Playing his first gigs around the city he wrote and recorded a first crop of singles while teaching private lessons, performing at weddings, and singing commercial jingles. This led to the eventual release of his breakout single, “Sing to You”, which changed his life. The track amassed over 150 million streams, landed on key Spotify playlists, and led to John hearing his music play in public for the first time. He witnessed his music climb to the top of AC Radio, alongside landing international headliner spots and festivals.

Despite all his industry success John has remained an enigma and prevalent behind the scenes collaborator, preferring at times to support the musical efforts of offers, in sacrifice of his own.  He has performed with some of the great artists of our time, from Sting, George Benson, Ben Folds, and jazz trumpeter Chris Botti on the David Foster-produced single “Paris.”

He had to figure out what would come next. So John made a big decision—actually, a series of big decisions. He traveled around the country, opening for Andy Grammer and performing at Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo in 2018, navigated Covid lockdown in NYC, then got engaged and married to his high school sweetheart in 2021 before he eventually moved to Los Angeles a few months later in 2022. He has continued touring non-stop, bringing his soulful pop style to such high-profile shows including an opening slot for Teddy Swims in 2024.

And from all of this change, exploration, confusion, and excitement came a rush of inspiration, which became the backbone of John’s new album Far From Here

Far From Here reflects on his dramatic life changes while told through vignettes capturing poignant personal memories. On “Far From Here” Splithoff examines his search for a new perspective with his New York to LA Move. “City Days” which features Chris Botti on trumpet, pays homage to his relationship with New York City at the various stages of his life. Tracks like “Glacier” symbolize relationships growing apart against the backdrop of Montana’s natural beauty, while “Oh Betty” tells a nostalgic story about the Buick he drove during his college days in Miami. “Same Page” recalls a transformative camping trip in Arizona that inspired his move west, and “Kyoto Snow” transports listeners to Japan, where he saw snowfall for the first time at a temple in Kyoto.

Far From Here also draws on his shifting family and friendship relationships which he holds so dear.  “A lot of these songs are associated with a time and place that hold a lot of meaning to me,” he says. “I also noticed, within all that change, how my relationships ebbed and flowed—I felt closer to people I didn’t know as well, and I felt distant from people who I considered my best friends and family. So it’s been an eye-opening path.”

Out of the turmoil and disruption, the uncertainty, the ups and downs of the last few years, John Splithoff emerged with a transformation in his attitude and his approach. With Far From Here, he is now perfectly poised to make his musical mark and his striking and evocative album is set to be one of the most celebrated of 2025.

Blessed with a profound gift to combine music and storytelling, Tink’s first single off the project, “Charged Up,” made prodigious use of her ability to weave a tapestry of emotion, inviting listeners into her world of love and self-discovery. The second single “Songs About U” featured certified platinum singer-songwriter Summer Walker and reached Top 10 on Billboard R&B Charts. The relatable and richly detailed slow burner transported fans to a realm where heartache and desire sonically collide, commanding listeners to pay attention to their varying degrees of pain. Tink and Walker explored the subject of toxic love with raw emotion and melodic prowess expressing their own unique personalities, styles and attitudes. Together, they lament about the challenges associated with passionate relationships and sing their way through the depths of love’s labyrinth.

Tink’s personality, delivery style and lyrical content gives off a modern day form of femininity; while she’s expressive and vulnerable, she’s also confident and assertive. Other guests on Winter’s Diary 5 include Detroit rapper Skilla Baby, Deep South multi-hyphenate NoCap, and sultry R&B crooner Jeremih while production ranges from multi-platinum Hitmaka to Grammy nominated Bizness Boi and SkipOnDaBeat.

In addition to her irresistible new album which received almost 200 million streams globally, Tink recently concluded The Magic Hour tour alongside Jhené Aiko, a sold-out arena tour which spanned over several months. This tour presented an unparalleled opportunity for established as well as new fans to experience Tink’s dynamic stage presence firsthand.

23. Mac Miller – Balloonerism

Source:Mac Miller

The Mac Miller Estate releases Balloonerism, the fan-favorite album that Mac created in 2014 from the same creative period that birthed his beloved mixtape Faces, officially for the first time. After being initially teased with a cryptic trailer at Tyler, The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival this past fall, Balloonerism was preceded by the single “5 Dollar Pony Rides,” which was released last week. The album arrives alongside Balloonerism – A Film Based On The Album By Mac Miller, directed by Samuel Jerome Mason and produced by Hornet. Presented by Remember Music & Warner Records, the film represents a long-form companion to the album that further illuminates the world showcased by the album’s trailer and is available to stream globally via Prime Video now.

Speaking about the process of conceptualizing and creating the film, Samuel Jerome Mason shares:

I was first approached by Miller and Karen to work on a music film to accompany Mac Miller’s unreleased album, Balloonerism, in 2023. I began by trying to find a thematic thread running through the album, which features illustrative lyrics that tell beguiling and tangential stories. The line, “but do you feel as big as your shadow,” struck me, and it became the thesis of sorts for the video.

Understanding the album to be about growing up, I set out to make a film that meditates on time—racing time and losing innocence. The roles that children adopt and how those roles ossify into adults who at their cores are still those shadowy children. The main character, Timmy, takes on the role of the wizard or storyteller, the one who summons a vision of the future for his group of friends.

In racing ahead, the children play out their darker instincts, letting their shadows run wild. In trying to fly they fall. But that journey is life itself, and the wisdom of older age resides in the newfound empathy we can extend to our younger, clumsier selves.

This interplay between gravity and light hopefully echoes the emotional effect of Malcolm’s music. He captured the way we all feel at times—lost, confused, and small—with humor, humility, and honesty. This album immortalizes Malcolm’s distinct spirit—as all wizards live forever through their magic—and I tried to do his legacy justice.

The project is indebted to Malcolm and the work surrounding the album—the artwork and plans laid, the maps drawn. As animators and filmmakers, we feel immense gratitude in joining ranks of collaborators and contributors to this album.

The album is available now digitally as well as in a variety of physical formats including CD, cassette and vinyl, all of which are now available for purchase. The vinyl, which was designed by Bráulio Amado with Mac’s commissioned cover art by Alim Smith,  is available as a two-LP release across two exclusive variants only available through balloonerism.com – a one-time, limited edition deluxe pressing that features a rainbow foil-wrapped slipcase with white splatter cloud vinyl and a 32-page color booklet featuring photos and lyrics as well as a limited one-time pressing that features clear vinyl.

Taboo is ultimately a celebration of freedom, with Niambi letting loose and showcasing her confidence. The project follows Niambi’s move from New York City to Puerto Rico embracing the natural surroundings of Puerto Rico’s environment. As a whole, Taboo explores the various sonic inspirations that have surrounded Niambi her whole life. Those inspirations can be heard on her singles “Ain’t Shit,” which explores R&B, “Soccer Mom,” which has a trap-like beat and was highlighted by Rolling Stone and CLASH Magazine, and “Rocksteady,” which has a Jersey Club air, along with the previously unreleased tracks “No New Friends,” which pulls from Niambi’s rock band days, “RUN IT!,” which echos 90s rap and “No Budget,” which hails inspiration from alternative rap. Additionally, “Soccer Mom” was also followed by a MajorStage live session featuring Portia Rolle on guitar, who is the grandmother of Niambi’s child and has played on records for artists including Elton John, Notorious B.I.G. and Lil Kim.

After establishing herself as one-half of the neo-soul / hip-hop duo OSHUN, Niambi is jumping headfirst into solo waters for the first time with Taboo. During their tenure, OSHUN received acclaim from outlets like Billboard, Rolling Stone, The FADER, NPR, PAPER, and collaborated with artists like Princess Nokia, Jorja Smith & LION BABE. The duo have also performed at Glastonbury, Afropunk and Melt! Festival, and were direct support for Lauryn Hill’s 2020 North American tour. In 2022, OSHUN released their final album, vol. ii.

25. Max Wareham – The Black & Gold

Source:Max Wareham

Bluegrass and hockey: two words not often used together. But banjo player, songwriter, and author Max Wareham thinks sports and art have more in common than people may believe, citing Hemingway’s bullfighting muse and Bill Monroe’s obsession with baseball, to name a few. “But in my opinion,” says Wareham, “for the perfect balance of grace and power, drive and agility…bluegrass and hockey are two peas in a pod.” With that theory, Wareham used his beloved Boston Bruins’ legendary ‘22-’23 season as inspiration for his latest single, “The Black & Gold,” matching a blistering, banjo-driven instrumental number to the Bruins’ record-breaking run; never letting up, only picking up steam.

With Wareham at the helm of his all-star studio band, “The Black & Gold” kicks off with a melody inspired by The Country Gentlemen’s founding five-stringer, Bill Emerson. Mandolinist Chris Henry takes over the lead line before bassist Mike Bub and snare drummer Larry Atamanuik shift gears into the song’s B section, an arpeggiated line inspired by another banjo legend, Rudy Lyle. After the first round, it’s time for the instrumentalists to break for the goal. Laura Orshaw’s fiddle passes to Chris Eldridge’s guitar before Wareham skates in to land his shot right back into “The Black & Gold’s” blink-and-you-missed-it theme, leaving listeners scrambling for that instant replay button. Stream or purchase “The Black & Gold” highlights right here

“The Black and Gold” is the latest single from Wareham’s upcoming debut album, DAGGOMIT!, which was produced by Rowan and is due out on February 21st. Fans are encouraged to check out Wareham’s previously released singles, “Hard Times Are Far Behind” and “Lonesome Blues, I’m Coming Home,” at their respective links and pre-order or pre-save DAGGOMIT! ahead of its February release right here.

Wareham is currently touring with Max Wareham & the National Bluegrass Team, featuring international mandolin prodigy Jean Baptiste Cardineau, singer and guitarist Walker Russell, and Boston bass stalwart Emma Turoff. Tour dates for Warham & the National Bluegrass Team as well as Wareham’s appearances with the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band can be found below or at maxwareham.com.

More About DAGGOMIT!: Produced by legendary grasser Peter Rowan and recorded by multi-Grammy-winning engineer Sean Sullivan, DAGGOMIT! features Chris Eldridge and David Grier on guitar, Laura Orshaw on fiddle, Chris Henry on mandolin, Mike Bub on bass, and Larry Atamanuik on snare drum; a group of stars making the initial listen of the album worth the price of admission, alone. But fans will undoubtedly stick around for the stories Wareham tells throughout the 13-song collection. Stories from a lifetime of experiences and feelings that together tell the story of exactly what makes Max Max.

26. JD Clayton – Dirt Roads Of Red

Source:JD Clayton

“One morning I was playing golf with a buddy from Georgia down at McCabe Golf Course in Nashville when he turned to me and said that there should be a song about wishing that the streets of gold in Heaven could be streets of Red, referring to the red clay down in Georgia,” remembers Arkansan singer-songwriter JD Clayton. Wheels turning, Clayton went home, picked up his guitar, and finished writing his new single “Dirt Roads of Red” in under an hour. “Now, being an Arkansas kid, I could never bring myself to write a song about Georgia. Thankfully, my favorite state, Colorado, also has a high concentration of iron deposits in its soil.”

With a halftime drum beat and a striding, bluesy piano, “Dirt Roads of Red” has an appropriately slinky vibe. “It feels inherently southern to me and has a super cool groove,” says Clayton. That feeling gets amplified with a slide guitar solo before the song’s final chorus: “Good God almighty I beg you please / Just before I’m dead / Turn them streets of gold to dirt roads of red.” Clayton’s first few lines set up the whole song and come from some personal experience. “It turned out to be a really special track to me because my dad is a pastor and I love the interaction the boy has with his pastor in the first verse of the song,” he says. Typical with the music Clayton has released throughout his budding career, his soulful delivery and funky-leaning instrumentation help frame the story he’s telling in a way all his own.

Today, in addition to the release of “Dirt Roads of Red,” Clayton has announced his highly anticipated sophomore album, Blue Sky Sundays. Due out on February 28th on Rounder Records, Blue Sky Sundays finds Clayton taking the helm as producer in the studio with his touring band to capture the vitality and grit of his crowd-thrilling live show. “When I made my first album I’d never been on the road, but after touring so much over the past few years my band is extremely dialed-in,” says Clayton. “I wanted to make a record that showcased what’s special about each of my bandmates, and I knew the best way to do that was to produce it myself.” Recorded at the legendary Sound Emporium Studios in Nashville and mixed by seven-time Grammy Award winner Vance Powell (Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton), Blue Sky Sundays ornaments its free-flowing sound with plenty of ear-catching sonic details, each crafted with a thoughtful spontaneity. “Life is crazy and it’s got a lot of blemishes, and I believe that music should too,” he says. “These songs all came from us locking ourselves in the studio and really having fun with the songs, and I think that’s the heart of the album.”

Fans can stream or purchase “Dirt Roads of Red” today at this link, pre-order or pre-save Blue Sky Sundays ahead of its February release right here, and be sure to check out Clayton’s previously-released Blue Sky Sunday singles “Let You Down,” “Dance Another Dance,” and “High Hopes & Low Expectations” at their respective links. For any more information, please visit jdclaytonofficial.com.

After a blistering run of shows on 2024’s Blue Sky Sundays tour, Clayton and his band are starting to announce new tour dates. On February 19th, Clayton will perform at the 1884 Lounge in Memphis, Tennessee, and on March 7th, he’ll head out to West Yellowstone, Montana, for the Wild West Winter Block Party. 27. Yola – My Way

Source:Yola

Today, Yola released her highly anticipated new EP My Way, released via S Curve Records. Drawing influence from progressive R&B, classic funk and soulful pop, it marks a new era for the six-time GRAMMY-nominated artist.

Yola also announced her Sovereign Soul Tour, which will see Yola perform across the USA, beginning on May 10 in Denver, with performances in Nashville, Atlanta, Washington, DC, New York, and more – full dates and details below. General Onsale will begin Friday, January 24, and fan pre-sales ahead. Details will be at: https://www.iamyola.com/tour

Lead single “Temporary” is a hypnotizing disco, rare groove gem, with Yola delivering a sparkling vocal (which would make Donna Summer and Minnie Riperton proud) all while cheekily putting no-good men in their place. It’s an ode to fuck boys and their necessary but limited purpose.

Says Yola about lead single “Temporary,” “It is in part an ode to fuckboys, but it is also a verbal dagger in the side to the most vapid of daters. I wrote this song while I was single and dating, because I’d find after an intense period of serious dating, I’d get dating fatigue and that would start playing games on your mind. You are tempted to smash guys prematurely who you are dating for serious purposes, you create crushes that shouldn’t exist. So, fuckboys were a good tool to chemically manage pent up hormones, so I could focus. As you can tell I’m a highly strategic person, ha.”

My Way was produced by Yola, GRAMMY Award-winning producer Sean Douglas (Lizzo, Chris Brown, Madonna, Selena Gomez, and Sia), and producer Zach Skelton (Lil Nas X, John Legend, Paul McCartney) and marks a new direction, and moment of creative agency.

“My Way is not about creative dictatorship.” Yola states, sharing, “It’s about being free to do what the songs need, because I don’t need to guide people towards allowing me agency, free of any restriction so I can tell my story more fully than ever before. This is me at my most musically free, and maybe a little nostalgic.”

The new EP My Way intentionally titled as a nod to her unique genre-fluid ethos, draws from a range of Yola’s influences that include progressive R&B, 70-80’s soulful pop, 90’s R&B and neo soul, as well as the cornerstone influence of the UK broken beats scene, from which Yola emerged, performing with Bugz In The Attic in the mid 2000’s. Broken Beat, Bruk or The West London sound, was a dance music movement whose pioneers included IG Culture, Phil Asher, 4Hero, Gilles Peterson, and collective Bugz in the Attic, whose members included Orin Walters (Afronaut), Paul Dolby (Seiji), Kaidi Tatham, Daz-I-Kue, Alex Phountzi (Neon Phusion), Cliff Scott, Mark Force, and Matt Lord, plus Hannah Vasanth, who Yola collaborated with on her critically acclaimed album, Stand For Myself

The EP opens with the blazing anthem “Future Enemies,” praised by FLOOD for its “disco madness of the highest order”  and the rattling sensual track “Symphony” which the New York Times called “funky, upbeat celebration of sensuality.” Its luscious horn melodies and staccato vocals call back to the funk glory days of Parliament-Funkadelic and Earth, Wind and Fire.

The title track, “My Way,” is a middle finger to those who tried to control YOLA’s artistry through industry mind games. “I think you know there’s nothing I could say, so we’re gonna do this my way”, she grits through her teeth on the chorus.

The EP closes with perhaps its most definitive song, “Ready.” Inspired by the UK’s Broken Beat scene that YOLA holds so dearly, it is also a response to the anti-immigration sentiment, and specifically the story of the so called Windrush generation. From 1948 through 1971, thousands of Caribbean immigrants (including Yola’s mother), were encouraged to embark to the UK to help rebuild the post-war country and have since been met with racism and oppression.

“I remember being told to go back to where I came from when I was a kid and at the time that felt offensive because I was born in the uk, I was where I came from,” Yola stated, adding “They meant that I should go for the first time to the place where either of my parents were born. In hindsight that was a great idea, in fact it’s an even better idea if they can in turn tell the Brits to leave where TF I was going. You want me gone from the uk? Feel free to buy me a ticket to Accra in December or Bridgetown in August!”- See full statement on the track below.

My Way is yet another showcase of Yola powerhouse vocals which have been praised by media and fans (Elton John, Chaka Khan, Joni Mitchell included) as singular and the best of her generation. Through dexterous full voice and her subtle soulful delivery, Yola explores themes including relationship boundaries, creative autonomy, finding agency and navigating the experience of a white centering in the music industry.

She is also a true multi-hyphan, something she attributes to her Gha ancestry, ““The Ga tribe of Ghana are known for being some of the artsiest people of West Africa. Another Ga person is Idris Elba”- she says. Exploring acting in recent years Yola reached a whole new audience portraying Sister Rosetta Tharpe in Baz Luhrmann’s musical drama, ELVIS, which earned her a NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Breakthrough Performance in a Motion Picture, and recently she made her Broadway debut as Persephone in Hadestown. Through whatever medium Yola chooses to share her gifts, she remains an unstoppable force, and remains one of the most exciting and dynamic artists in music today.

BET put it best, “In the world of entertainment, Yola is a one-of-one.”

Full statement from Yola on Ready:

“Ready is a song that has been percolating for most of my life. It’s kinda about being an immigrant and being a child of immigrants generally but it’s inspired more specifically by the windrush generation in the uk and the later arrivals of Caribbean people to uk shores, of which my mother was one such arrival.

The British turned up with videos shot on the sunniest day of the year in the uk, to convince Caribbeans that a life there would be seamless and financially beneficial. They could send money back home and build dream homes. What happened in reality was a massive bait and switch where they were sent on one way tickets leaving their elders vulnerable to predatory real estate practices that dispossessed locals of all beach front property.

I remember being told to go back to where I came from when I was a kid and at the time that felt offensive because I was born in the uk, I was where I came from. They meant that I should go for the first time to the place where either of my parents were born. In hindsight that was a great idea, in fact it’s an even better idea if they can in turn tell the Brits to leave where TF I was going. You want me gone from the uk? Feel free to buy me a ticket to Accra in December or Bridgetown in August! IYKYK 😉 🇬🇭 🇧🇧!

MF fools telling me to leave a cold dark rainy island to relocate to paradise! Supremacy got them so twisted they didn’t even recognise what an upgrade looked like!

I may indeed one day end up in one of those two exact places when I retire, and the vibe in the song is very much giving “peace bitches I’m out” energy.”

28. BLOND:ISH – Higher

Source:BLOND:ISH

Today, DJ, producer, activist, and entrepreneur BLOND:ISH unleashes her new single, “Higher,” a collaboration with Black Circle, via Insomniac Records. The track, which has served as one of the most rapturous moments in her live sets and Abracadabra parties over the last year, is out now.

“Higher” marks the tipping point of album anticipation, with BLOND:ISH’s sophomore album, Never Walk Alone, right around the corner. With its vocal that repeats, “You take me higher, baby,” the track echoes BLOND:ISH’s paramount intention to push the planet closer to Happy Happy World, an inclusive place of sustainable unity, respect, and nourishment.

In step with her career-spanning mission to eliminate plastic from the music industry, BLOND:ISH announced in December a special BioVinyl release for her forthcoming studio album Never Walk Alone. The release, which utilizes a recyclable material that is identical in quality to conventional pressing, is set for February 14th, 2025. This special release takes BLOND:ISH’s “#PlasticFreeParty” movement, the vision from which she launched her foundation Bye Bye Plastic, to the next level. Leading by example in an industry that relies heavily on fossil fuels to create vinyl records, her next body of work will be pressed on Bio-attributed PVC. The material is mainly made from biogenic waste (e.g., used cooking oil), is 99.98% petroleum-free, and cuts 90% of the carbon dioxide emissions in a mass-balanced approach. This initiative (learn more here) will be used for BLOND:ISH’s first-ever vinyl release.

After a massive debut year, rising singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and alternative outlier Bryant Barnes blossoms into an artistic luminary with a emotionally charged new ballad, “Why Can’t You” out now via Mercury Records. Listen HERE.

“Why Can’t You”is a deeply personal track that captures the raw vulnerability of heartbreak and  unrequited love, showcasing Bryants unparalleled ability to connect with listeners through evocative lyrics and enchanting melodies. Over his signature simplistic guitar strums, he explores the profound loneliness of a relationship in turmoil, as Bryant pleads for his partner to stay in love.

About the song’s creation he shared, “I remember back in the day I was looking for a bunch of beats and I was struggling to find anything I liked. That night I had a dream that I’d met an artist and I didn’t really have music for them to hear, so when I woke up, I said damn I gotta lock in. I started making a song from scratch and that was my first time doing that. It ended up being something I really liked! I decided to work on it in LA with Andrew Luce and make sure we finished it. That was over a year ago and we finally got it to where it’s at now. The song is, as most songs are, about one of the girls that I was talking to back in the day.

This song arrives as Bryant Barnes gears up to join 070 Shake on her highly anticipated The Petrichor Tour with 22 dates across North America. Kicking off on January 24th in Washington, DC, the show visits Brooklyn on February 1st, and wraps in Los Angeles on February 28th. 36. Ahadadream ft. Champion & Logan – Big Boy Tracks

Source:AHADADREAM

Ahadadream has joined forces with Champion and breakout grime MC, Logan, on new single “Bad Boy Tracks” — listen HERE via Major Recordings/Warner Records.

Tracing his early UK club influences in grime, UKG and UK funky, “Big Boy Tracks” captures Ahadadream at his most upfront and rowdy, joining forces with funky pioneer Champion and hotshot barrer, Logan, on a record purpose built for reloads in the dance.

Much like some of the early output on Ahadadream’s More Time Records imprint, “Big Boy Tracks” is muscular, hyper-kinetic club music written with a distinctly UK accent. From the wonky, funky-adjacent basslines to the nimble drumwork and Logan’s dark, incendiary verses, it’s a track that pays homage to the sounds that helped define Ahad’s own early clubbing experiences in London and beyond.

“Seeing Champion DJ at the Butterz raves at Cable before it shut down was such a formative experience for me”, Ahadadream recalls, “..and hearing the rhythm of UK Funky definitely shaped the way I approach my productions. His early productions, such as ‘Lighter VIP’, will forever be a stone cold UK classic. Logan is one of my favourite MCs in Grime, with such a versatile flow that goes over any genre. He joined me for my all-night-long set at Phonox last year and since then, I’ve always wanted to do a tune together. “

“Big Boy Tracks” follows a busy 2024 for Ahadadream that saw him collaborate with Skrillex & Priya Ragu on the club-busting “TAKA” — a record that polled as one of Mixmag’s Best Tracks Of The Year and has racked up over 11M streams to date — as well as collaborating with Nikki Nair on “Read My Mind,” playing sold-out North America, Australia and Asia tours, and making debut festival appearances at Coachella and Lollapalooza.
