The highly anticipated Snowfall spinoff at FX is gaining momentum with some major casting news. Amongst the added cast members are actors Asante Blackk, Peyton Alex Smith and Simmie Sims III. Read what we know about the upcoming spinoff inside.

As reported by Blavity, Asante Blackk, Peyton Alex Smith, and Simmie Sims III have officially joined the cast as series regulars, starring alongside Snowfall alums Gail Bean and Isaiah John.

While details about their specific roles are being kept under wraps, the announcement adds serious star power and intrigue to the already buzzed-about project. Blackk, an Emmy nominee recognized for his gripping performance in Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us, brings gravitas to the ensemble. He’s also slated to appear in the third season of Euphoria. Smith, a familiar face from All American: Homecoming and Legacies, is no stranger to spin-offs himself. Meanwhile, Sims (better known in the music world as rapper Buddy) brings fresh energy and credibility from his work in music, having worked with the likes of Pharrell, Kendrick Lamar, and Nipsey Hussle. His recent TV appearances include Rap Sh!t and Bel-Air.

Set in 1990s Los Angeles shortly after the conclusion of the original Snowfall series, the pilot centers around Bean’s character, a recovering addict who fights to take West Coast rap mainstream amidst a violent and escalating gang war. John, who played Leon throughout Snowfall‘s six-season run, is set to reprise his role.

Originally announced ahead of the Snowfall finale in 2023, the spinoff has been in development for several years. Bean’s role was first confirmed, but it wasn’t until later stages that John was officially attached to the project. The new pilot signals a shift in focus from the crack epidemic of the ’80s to the music and street culture of the early ’90s, offering fertile ground for FX to explore another dimension of Black life in L.A.

Malcolm Spellman, known for his work on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Empire, is writing the pilot and executive producing alongside Snowfall showrunner Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme, Julie DeJoie, Michael London, and Trevor Engelson. FX Productions will produce the project.

With this powerhouse team in front of and behind the camera, the Snowfall spinoff is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated new dramas in development.
