A Tiger Woods biopic is officially in the works at Amazon MGM Studios, with King Richard director Reinaldo Marcus Green in talks to helm the project. Read more about what we know about the film inside.

The film, which will focus on Woods’ formative years and his legendary career, is being developed by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions, alongside producer Irwin Winkler.

The biopic will be based on Kevin Cook’s book, The Tiger Slam: The Inside Story of the Greatest Golf Ever Played, which chronicles Woods’ historic 2000-2001 season when he won all four major championships consecutively. This is still a feat that no other golfer has achieved. This period, known as the “Tiger Slam,” cemented Woods as one of the greatest athletes of all time.

Higher Ground Takes on Tiger Woods’ Story

Higher Ground’s involvement in Woods’ story is an intriguing choice, given the political differences between the Obamas and Woods. While the former president and first lady are prominent Democratic figures, Woods has leaned more conservative in recent years. He has been linked to Donald Trump, having golfed with him before the Super Bowl and later visiting him at the White House during Black History Month. Woods and Trump were also involved in discussions with the head of the Saudi Wealth Fund, which backs the controversial LIV Golf tournament.

Despite the political contrast, there’s no denying Woods’ place in Black history. In 1997, he became the first Black golfer to win a major championship, breaking barriers in a sport that historically excluded Black athletes. His dominance on the course inspired a new generation of Black golfers while simultaneously stirring racial tensions in the sport.

A Story of Triumph and Controversy

Woods’ career has been nothing short of legendary, but it hasn’t been without scandal. His meteoric rise in golf was followed by a publicized fall from grace due to marital scandals and personal struggles. Despite these setbacks, Woods remains an iconic figure in the sport, having made one of the greatest comebacks in sports history by winning the Masters in 2019. This took place 14 years after his first victory at Augusta.

With Green at the helm, the biopic is expected to capture both Woods’ triumphs and controversies, much like King Richard did for Venus and Serena Williams’ father. The film has the potential to highlight Woods’ impact on golf, his resilience in the face of personal and professional challenges, and the racial dynamics that shaped his career.

Though details on casting and a release date remain unknown, this project is shaping up to be a must-watch. Whether focusing on his record-breaking achievements or his personal trials, the Tiger Woods biopic is set to be a compelling look at one of the most complex and influential athletes of our time.
