Jones sat down on media personality Gina’s Sirius XM show to share how the hilarious “Boondocks” episode came to be. In the episode, they humorously explore themes of jealousy and infidelity, centering on the character Sarah DuBois’s infatuation with R&B artist Usher, which leads to tension with her husband, Tom.
The co-executive producer recounted that the storyline was drawn from an actual event during a celebratory dinner at Mr. Chow’s with his now ex-wife. Attendees included Jones, his wife, his co-executive producer, Aaron McGruder, his wife, McGruder’s assistant and his girlfriend, who all enjoyed dinner to commemorate the show’s renewal for a second season.
The evening took an unexpected turn when Usher entered the restaurant. Jones’s ex-wife, who had been upset over a discussion about the show’s controversial R. Kelly episode, immediately shifted her demeanor upon noticing the R&B crooner. She began making “goo-goo eyes” and attempting to catch the singer’s attention, which Usher reciprocated with waves and gestures. The situation escalated when, as the group prepared to leave, Jones observed his wife at Usher’s table, introducing him merely as “Carl,” forgetting to mention they were MARRIED.
Naturally, the story was shared with the show’s writing team, leading to its adaptation into the series. In the episode, Sarah becomes enamored with Usher during a dinner, leaving Tom feeling sidelined. Jones even lent his voice to a waiter who, witnessing Tom’s predicament, delivers the now-iconic line, “Wouldn’t let that s**t happen to me, though.” This phrase has since become a popular meme, symbolizing situations where individuals tolerate disrespect.
