A new poll commissioned by REFORM Alliance highlights that criminal justice reform is a key issue for Gen Z voters ahead of the 2024 election. Read more details about the latest poll and how it could affect voting in the upcoming election.
With over 64 percent of respondents aged 18-28 indicating that they would be more likely to support a candidate advocating for modernizing the criminal justice system, it’s clear that this generation wants action. The poll, conducted by The Bullfinch Group, surveyed 1,000 young adults, 75 percent of whom are registered or likely voters.
Key issues that resonate with Gen Z include probation and parole reform, reducing technical violations, and policies aimed at public safety. An overwhelming 72 percent of respondents emphasized that it’s important for elected officials to support criminal justice reform, while 90 percent say that public safety is a priority. This generation views reform not as a partisan issue but a matter of fairness and public safety.
In response to this momentum, REFORM Alliance is launching the Future Shapers Network, aiming to mobilize young voters in key battleground states such as Pennsylvania, Florida, and Georgia. The goal is to push for federal legislation like the Safer Supervision Act, which focuses resources on high-risk individuals and provides rehabilitation services for others.
As the most racially and ethnically diverse voting group in history, Gen Z’s influence is growing. They are not only demanding real solutions to the criminal justice system but also holding candidates accountable for their stances. This upcoming election could see Gen Z as a deciding factor, especially when their votes are tied to transformative issues like criminal justice reform.
“We want a justice system that doesn’t continue the cycle of trauma but offers real second chances,” said Jamila Small, Youth Fellow with See Us, Support Us (SUSU).
