The 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards nominations have arrived. The list comes with its share of surprises, disappointments, and spirited conversations about representation. While this year offered moments of recognition for Black talent, some glaring omissions have sparked debate.
On the bright side Colman Domingo scored a nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for his commanding role in Sing Sing. His performance has been hailed as memorable, securing him a well-deserved spot in the awards race. Other Black talent were recognized for their contributions in both TV and film.
On the TV side, Donald Glover received a nomination for Best Actor in a Drama TV Series for his performance in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” Quinta Brunson and Ayo Edebiri are both nominees for the Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy TV series category for “Abbott Elementary” and “The Bear,” respectively.
The Snubs
However, the snubs are impossible to ignore. After rave reviews for her performance in The Piano Lesson, Danielle Deadwyler has been overlooked yet again. After the Globes ignored her performance in Till two years ago, fans are upset that she hasn’t been nominated this year.
While Domingo was recognized for his performance in the A24 prison drama, Sing Sing was not nominated in the motion picture categories and none of the other leading talents were acknowledged.
Forgotten Talent
Since The Golden Globes was criticized back in 2021 for overlooking Black-led films, it has diversified a bit. This year’s lineup of nominees included the likes of Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”), Zendaya (“Challengers”) and Denzel Washington (“Gladiator II”). However, another surprising snubs involved Black actresses who delivered some of the year’s most acclaimed work. Marianne Jean-Baptiste received back-to-back wins from critics’ groups in New York and Los Angeles this week for her performance in Hard Truths, and somehow, goes unrecognized by the Golden Globes.
The Golden Globes have long been scrutinized for their diversity—or lack thereof—and while this year’s nominations show signs of progress, the omissions underline how far Hollywood still has to go. As the awards season unfolds, it will be interesting to see how these nominations influence the broader conversations about recognition, equity, and storytelling.
