The world of The Sims is getting the Hollywood treatment, and it looks like Margot Robbie is set to play a key role—behind the scenes as executive producer. Learn more about the upcoming Sims project inside.
Robbie, known for her standout performances in films like Barbie and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, is reportedly stepping into the producer’s chair for an upcoming live-action movie based on the iconic life simulation game The Sims.
The viral news, which has been generating buzz across social media, has fans of the game and movie lovers alike intrigued about how The Sims will be adapted for the big screen. The beloved video game franchise, known for allowing players to create and control virtual people in a digital world, has long been a fan favorite due to its open-ended storytelling, customization options, and quirky sense of humor. With Margot attached to produce, many are wondering how the film will capture the essence of the game’s unique, no-rules gameplay.
Specific details about the plot and cast are still under wraps. We do know that Robbie’s production company LuckyChap, whose body of work also includes Promising Young Woman, Saltburn and Barbie, will take the lead on developing and producing the project.
Her involvement sparks speculation that the film could combine both comedy and heart, much like her recent hit film Barbie.
EA’s vice president and general manager of The Sims, Kate Gorman, anticipates a similar cultural impact of 2023’s Barbie.
“It’s very much rooted in The Sims universe,” she told Variety. “And what we want is to have a truly authentic ‘Sims’ experience brought to a theatrical release. So what you’ll see from us is that we have been wanting to get this right. We wanted the right partners and to make an impact the size of something like a Barbie movie. And we know there’s so much love and nostalgia – probably beyond what we would even realize – for The Sims, and so many people like us have played throughout generations.”
Gorman goes on to share how they play to add a lot of The Sims’ in-game lore.
“You will see a lot of The Sims universe come to life and you will see a lot of the classic experiences that our players have in the games come to life in the movie,” she adds. “The idea is to say that it lives within this space. It’s a nod to all of the amazing play and creation and fun that people have had over the last 25 years within The Sims.”
The announcement of the project has reignited excitement in the Sims community and the gaming world at large. With EA, Robbie and her production company’s creative vision and the endless possibilities within The Sims universe, fans are eager to see what this live-action adaptation will bring to the big screen.
