For those who can’t keep up with the racial divide in America, let’s take a walk down memory lane, shall we? The “Montgomery Brawl” refers to a widely publicized altercation that took place on Aug. 5, 2023, in Montgomery, Alabama. The incident began when a Black dock worker was attacked by a group of white individuals after he asked them to move their boat from a restricted area along the Alabama River. The confrontation quickly escalated into a brawl involving several people, both Black and white, and was captured on video, which subsequently went viral on social media.
The brawl drew significant attention due to the racial dynamics involved and the broader context of racial tensions in the U.S. It highlighted ongoing issues related to racial inequality and violence, sparking widespread discussions and reactions from the public, media, and civil rights organizations.
In the aftermath, several participants were charged with assault and other offenses. The incident also led to increased efforts within the community to address and reduce racial tensions, as well as calls for justice and accountability. The anniversary of the brawl is commemorated by some as a reminder of the need for continued efforts towards racial harmony and social justice.
The upcoming event hosted by Anderson kicks off at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 5 with participants gathering at the historic Court Square Fountain, where they will receive a bouquet of roses. The evening will open with a powerful ceremony featuring spoken word performances and the rhythmic beats of a drummer.
Healers will lead the way down Commerce Street, offering prayers as the procession moves towards the Alabama River, the site of the 2023 Montgomery Brawl. Here, participants will place their roses in the river, concluding the event with a gratitude circle, sharing reflections on what the event and community mean to them.
Ce Anderson, the visionary behind this commemoration, shares, “My hope is for women to connect deeply with their own power and take that strength with them into the next few months. This is an opportunity for us to honor the women who have come before us, recognize the path they’ve made for us, and appreciate where we are in the present.”
The chosen location along the Alabama River is deeply symbolic, not only marking the site of the Montgomery Brawl but also reflecting on Montgomery’s painful and violent history. Commerce Street, once used to transport cotton before slavery was abolished, served as the path for enslaved Africans to the auction house. The walk is a poignant reminder of past suffering and a tribute to the healing and progress that paves the way for a more compassionate future.
Ce Anderson founded the Feminine Flow Experience with the mission to help others harness their inner strength and raise their consciousness, creating the life, relationships, and existence they desire. Candyce “Ce” Anderson, M.S., L.P.C., is an author and licensed therapist serving Alabama, Georgia, Washington D.C., and Ohio.
