Netflix continues its commitment to bringing powerful, diverse stories to the global stage with the release of Anuja, a deeply moving short film that has garnered critical acclaim. Read more and check out the trailer inside.

Anuja has already made an impact in film with its an Oscar nomination at the 97th Academy Awards. Directed by Adam J. Graves and produced by an all-star team including Mindy Kaling, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Guneet Monga Kapoor, the film explores themes of family, sacrifice, and the life-changing power of opportunity.

The film follows Anuja, a gifted nine-year-old girl who spends her days working alongside her 17-year-old sister, Palak, in a back-alley garment factory. Their world is turned upside down when a teacher arrives with an unexpected offer: a chance for Anuja to attend an elite boarding school. The sisters are faced with an impossible decision—one that mirrors the tough choices countless young girls around the world must make every day.

“This story of hope was brought to life through collaboration with so many talented and passionate people,” said Graves. “We are thrilled that Anuja has found a home on Netflix, where it can finally be enjoyed by audiences around the world.”

Producer Mindy Kaling echoed this sentiment, calling it a “dream come true” to have the film reach a global audience. “I’m so grateful to Netflix for seeing what I saw in this beautiful short film,” she shared.

The film’s raw and emotional storytelling is amplified by the standout performances of Sajda Pathan (Anuja) and Ananya Shanbhag (Palak), who bring authenticity and depth to their roles. Supporting cast members Nagesh Bhosle and Gulshan Walia further enrich the narrative, painting a vivid picture of the harsh realities many children face while highlighting the unwavering bond between two sisters.

Guneet Monga Kapoor, known for her work amplifying impactful South Asian stories, emphasized the importance of Anuja’s message.

“It is a privilege to share the story of Anuja, representing the work of Salaam Baalak Trust Delhi—the voice of countless youth who bravely face formidable circumstances every day,” she said in a statement. “Even through unimaginable odds, they show us there is reason to smile.”

Executive producer Jonas praised Anuja for its heartfelt exploration of love, family, and resilience.
