This is the 9th compilation album from Boston, Massachusetts underground record label Leedz Edutainment. Since the early 2010s, they have dropped a handful of projects, including the Mass Movementz duology, the Write Off tetralogy, and Eastern Standard. It has been several years since the imprint’s founder, Ned “Needz” Wellbery, released his curated full-length A Worker Among Workers. Now, Hard to Learn arrives 49 months later, offering a significantly more vulnerable perspective than its predecessors.

The title track, featuring the Barrel Brothers and REKS and produced by The Arcitype, follows the “Acceptance” intro. It begins with an uplifting boom-bap opener about patience, while “The Friends of Eddie Leedz” by Big Shug, Ed O.G., and Mann Terror finds the trio repping their city. “The Darkside” by Lex the Hex Master, Ruste Juxx, and XL the Beast explores a horrorcore vibe, while “Walk Among What Remains” by Ill Bill, Q-Unique, Rite Hook, and Wildcard blends hardcore hip hop with rap rock.

“No Surprise” by Blueprint, MURS, and Sareem Poems returns to the boom-bap sound, discussing the struggle to survive, while “Bear the Burden” by Akrobatik, M-Dot, and Reef the Lost Cauze highlights the triumph of overcoming obstacles.

The album continues with a diverse range of tracks, including the posse cut “Battle Tested” and the introspective “Fictional Fantasies” by Awon, Emskee, and Sadat X. Ultimately, Hard to Learn succeeds by placing the listener in the shoes of someone who has carried more than they thought possible. With The Arcitype handling the majority of the production, the project retains a gritty, hardcore hip hop foundation while confronting themes of addiction, grief, and redemption.
