Flint, Michigan’s own Jon Connor continues his prolific 2026 run with the release of The Artist Yahn Freeman IV. A seasoned emcee and producer, Connor has spent the last two decades cementing his legacy through projects like The Calling, Vinnie Chase, and S.O.S. trilogies. Following a tenure at Aftermath Entertainment and the release of Food for the Soul and 24, this latest EP—produced entirely by Smitti Boi—marks a significant milestone in his ongoing monthly series.
The project opens with “Lord You Know I’m Trying,” a track that masterfully blends gospel-sampled trap production with Connor’s introspective lyricism. He pivots seamlessly into the boom-bap aesthetic on “1st Day Back,” where he reflects on the urgency of his craft. The EP maintains this momentum with “Solid Ground” and the MRK_SX-assisted “Evolve,” both of which showcase a mature, conscious approach to modern hip-hop.
The second half of the EP deepens the narrative. “The Party 2” serves as a spiritual successor to a standout track from the second installment of the series, while “Endless Road” captures a sense of isolation and the struggle for connection. The project concludes with the reflective “Praying for the Sunshine” and the hopeful “They Can’t Stop My Dreams,” rounding out a cohesive listening experience.
What truly distinguishes The Artist Yahn Freeman IV from its predecessors is the technical execution. Maestro Williams of Silent Riot provides what is arguably the finest mixing and mastering work of the entire series. The engineering creates a pristine soundscape that allows Smitti Boi’s production—a healthy balance of boom-bap grit and trap energy—to shine. By prioritizing sonic clarity alongside his signature lyrical depth, Jon Connor has successfully elevated his All Varsity Music Group output to a new level of excellence.
