Oakland, California-based recording artist and educator Ras Ceylon has returned with his 9th studio LP, Scrollz of Lion Rock. Widely recognized as the first Sri Lankan emcee to emerge within the western hip-hop canon following his 1999 debut, Ceylon has spent the last two decades building a formidable discography. This latest project, which features executive production from the late Oli “Power” Grant and A&R oversight from Holy Toledo Productions founder M-80, serves as a testament to his enduring influence.

The album opens with the atmospheric “Grand Entrance (Sigriya)” before transitioning into “Word is Bond,” a track that highlights the chemistry between Ceylon, Cappadonna, and Timbo King. The trio navigates a classic boom-bap instrumental with ease, reasserting their presence in the scene. Throughout the project, Ceylon tackles complex themes; “Dis.Info.Age,” which samples the late MF DOOM, offers a sharp critique of modern misinformation, while “Ancestors,” featuring Ras Kass, explores the resilience of Black culture.

The production remains largely rooted in traditional boom-bap, providing a sturdy foundation for Ceylon’s lyrical focus on power, resistance, and cultural memory. Tracks like “Duality,” produced by Mathematics, stand out as highlights, offering a nuanced look at the drive for success. The album also features contributions from 9th Prince, Planet Asia, and Prodigal Sunn, all of whom help expand the narrative scope of the record.

Scrollz of Lion Rock is a fully realized statement that cements Ras Ceylon’s place within the Wu-Tang Killa Beez lineage. By blending his globally conscious voice with the gritty, street-level production of his peers, he has crafted an album that feels both timely and timeless.
