Detroit horrorcore veteran The R.O.C. has officially returned with his fourth studio album, No Direction. A pivotal figure in the scene, he first rose to prominence as a member of the House of Krazees alongside Jamie Madrox and Monoxide. Following his tenure with the group and his work in the duo HaLFBrEEd—which produced the horrorcore classic Kontamination—The R.O.C. has continued to carve out a distinct path, notably releasing Digital Voodoo under Majik Ninja Entertainment. After his 2019 project Monsters Ain’t Real, this latest release marks a significant chapter in his storied career.
The album opens with the “Space” intro, setting a cinematic tone before transitioning into the self-produced “It Ain’t My Business.” The track serves as an explosive reintroduction, showcasing his signature lyrical bite. Throughout the project, The R.O.C. balances aggressive delivery with introspective songwriting. On “Best Decision,” he reunites with Jamie Madrox to reflect on life’s choices, while tracks like “Around We Go” and “Superpower”—featuring a high-energy appearance from Monoxide—highlight his ability to maintain a cohesive, energetic flow.
The production on No Direction is notably versatile. “Broadcast System” leans into a futuristic boom bap aesthetic, while “2084,” featuring Zodiac MPrint, offers a conscious, cautionary narrative. As the album nears its conclusion, “Finish Strong” utilizes a grim instrumental to underscore his determination, followed by the gospel-influenced “Bridges.” The project closes with “New You,” a charismatic, funky track that celebrates personal growth and improvement.
Ultimately, No Direction stands as a testament to The R.O.C.’s enduring relevance. While Digital Voodoo remains a high-water mark, this latest effort is arguably his strongest full-length release in years. It is a project that rewards long-time fans while proving that his album storytelling remains sharp. With a solid 8/10 score, it is clear that The R.O.C. continues to be one of the most underappreciated voices in Detroit hip hop.
