Magical, that is the only word that can truly describe Emma Bradley’s songwriting talents. She possesses this gift of being able to translate her own authentic emotions into her lyrics that form a realer than life connection with her listeners and, as a result, makes every song she croons feel like it was written specifically for you. Even today, as she elegantly portrays platonic love and friendship in Malibu, she allows ourselves to be inserted into the lyrics, painting ourselves into the narrative that she’s crafted. We see ourselves in her music, even if she wrote it from her own personal experiences, we relate to them, and that is special.

If you ever want to go out with your friends and feel like you’re in a magical world, think Bridge To Terebithia but without the death, then Malibu could easily soundtrack that. The ethereal keys possess a mystical quality of utter whimsy that highlights the haunting beauty of her vocal tone which soars over angelic choral harmonies. A lush and divine number that further showcases her incredible talent.

“‘Malibu’ is about my best friend, who is like a sister to me and means everything to me. It’s an ode to our friendship! I remember reading something that said ‘platonic love saves lives’ and it really resonated with me. I don’t think there are enough songs written about platonic love and how important / special it is. I wrote it at the beginning of lockdown when I couldn’t see her (or anyone for that matter). It’s super nostalgic as it reminisces on a day we spent in Malibu a couple of years ago, which is one of my favourite days of all time. The song is less about the place and more about the feeling and mindset we were in on that day, and wanting to tap back into that headspace – a moment of bliss and peace whilst in a time of uncertainty and solitude. Malibu is my favourite thing I’ve written just because it means so much to me.”
