HER has been cast in the Warner Bros Studios musical feature ‘The Color Purple’, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Squeak, a waitress-turned-aspiring singer played by Rae Dawn Chong in the 1985 film, will be played by the award-winning musician.
Reports of HER’s casting comes after Corey Hawkins was confirmed as one of the cast members. The upcoming movie is a film version of the Tony-nominated musical, which is based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name.
Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg will produce the musical; the former starred in the 1985 film ‘The Color Purple’, and the latter directed it. Other executive producers include Alice Walker, Rebecca Walker, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Carla Gardini, and Mara Jacobs. The Warner Bros production will be directed by Blitz Bazawule, with the screenplay written by Marcus Gardley.
HER has already won an Oscar for her song ‘Fight For You’, from Warner Bros’ ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’. She is also a 4-time GRAMMY winner. On December 20, 2023, ‘The Color Purple’ will be released.
