Not much is known about the Chicago native Julius Dolls other than the fact he releases outlandishly lavish alternative pop that oozes opulence through his woozy soundscape of hazy guitar melodies, spaced out percussion and distinct charm that compliments his unorthodox out of the box sonic identity. Being reminiscent of Oliver Tree mixed with Rex Orange County his debut EP was released at the book end of 2019, but that wasn’t the original start of his musical journey, it actually began from a Kanye West anecdote where he said it took him years of making bad music to get to his debut. This spurred Dolls to experiment with music until he discovered his signature sound which contained a fascinatingly unique aura that encapsulated everything he wanted to say and then some with his unorthodox sound.

His new EP Lavishly Outlandish was a treat but the track free as hell was a sonic experience I couldn’t get enough of. The intoxicatingly addictive laidback groove gets your head bopping as his charisma filled warped vocal with its distinct tone glides across the infectious avant-garde soundscape. His lyrical musings about how minuscule our worries are compared to everything else going on in the world pack an almighty punch that will put our life in perspective. With all this, it’s hard not to fall head over heels for this young artist’s unique sound.
