If you’ve been into movie culture or seen any major Hollywood romantic blockbuster like 500 Days of Summer and Garden State then you’ll know of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope. It’s a female character who’s sole existence is to help the usually unfulfilled, depressed or lonely male character learn to live life and just essentially further their character development, a terrible trope. However the young musician Maeve has decided to take the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind approach to acknowledge its existence but unashamedly bash it away because, as Kate Winslet’s character said best, “Too many guys think I’m a concept, or I complete them, or I’m gonna make them alive. But I’m just a fucked-up girl who’s lookin’ for my own peace of mind; don’t assign me yours.”
Lyrically this track is brilliant, especially the bridge building up to the chorus with, “Not your cameo / I’m the god damn show,” being the perfect representation of what this empowering piece is all about. She transitions openly from this dated trope and into the main character through not only the timeless lyrics but also the production where the deep ominous synths clash with the delicate piano keys to represent this metamorphosis she goes through. A unique single with a strong message, what’s not to love?
