Last week, London-based Nigerian spoken word artist Obongjayar released the abstract visual for his interesting track ‘Sugar’. From his dingy dressing room, he readies for his performance and the stage manager enters the room to let him know how much time he has left. Next, the seemingly nervous artist blows air towards the mirror and heads over to the stage with a big coat and creme-coloured trousers, no shirt underneath. Moments later, the Calabar-born entertainer walks to centre stage and stands in front of a mixed crowd (that isn’t sold out) to perform ‘Sugar’. On the Pru Ainslie-produced record, Obongjayar clarifies why he is unique compared to others, how he’s turned his pain to sugar, and not accepting anything less than a win. It isn’t long before his body morphs onstage, and all audience members get up and leave the venue except one. Watch to see how it ends.
