With a voice as light and soulful as JONES’, Dana McCoy is carving out her own space of summer-ready R&B. And like summer, her newest single “Night After Night” takes a while to ease in; the first verse feels disjunct, the guitars seemingly off-beat, violin notes arranged in the shape of a question mark. Once McCoy finds her groove though, lets go of her inhibitions (“I never know what to say / But baby, I’ll show you tonight”), she needs no introduction but the horns’ four-note fanfare. Strings start to beam down like rays of light through trees, synths flutter and spin like a playground roundabout in space, and the chimes ring in with the same sparkle as sunburnt concrete. This is love, channeled through the warm vibrant ease of a season spent under the sun.
